Byzantine Icons have their name from the Byzantine Empire going back to the 4th century. It was then that Christianity was accepted as the official religion of the empire. Although Byzantine Icons were painted before that time, they were not widely used or known. The were used ownly by Christians who up until that time were persecuted. It was after 312 AD that Byzantine Icons came into their own. It might be said that Byzantine Icons were, in their own way, visual aids for people of that time. Since most were illiterate, the could relate to "pictures". It is important to understand that the image is one that shows the Kingdom that is not of this world, but of the One on High. We know that Byzantine Icons are never discarded but are cherished forever. What greater gift is there that one that will always be kept? |
