St. Edward was the son of King Edgar the Peaceable and succeeded his father in 975 as King of England. Theodoric Paulus testifies that "he had great devotion and excellent conduct. Above all he loved God the Church. As his father he was an earnest supporter of the monastics". This aroused the displeasure of the secular party within the Church and other allies. They conspired and had him murdered at Corfe in Dorset.
