Herman and Innocent of Alaska-St. Herman of Alaska - December 12/25 St. Herman was from Valaam monastic community. In 1794 he and ten other monks went to Aleutian Islands as missionaries to the pagan natives. He survived the other monks. In spite of the harsh treatment of the Russian traders, the natives soon grew to love St. Herman. He established a monastic center on Spruce Island. He was canonized in August 1970 St. Innocent of Alaska - March 31/April 13.
