Theodora the Empress was the wife of the Byzantine Emperor Theophilos. She was born in Paphlagonia and was a beautiful daughter of a minor government official . At a gathering of the most eligible young ladies of the Empire, the future Emperor, Theophilis, selected her as his wife. She came from a pious family that held to the devotion of holy icons. About 20 years before the iconoclastic controversy had reopened. Theophilis was openly opposed to the veneration of holy images.
