Vladimir was the grandson of St. Olga. It was she that instilled the first ideas of Holy Orthodoxy. He was a Varangian and attempted to unify the Slavic tribes of Rus. He decided to unify them with a common religion. He sent emissarys throughout the world ti investigate. They did not like the Christian west or the Jews if the east nor did they like Islam. But when they went to Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, they did nit know if they were in heaven or on earth. So they reported to Vladimir. By this, he adopted Orthodox Christianity.
